We are a classroom of readers: new readers, developing readers, and avid readers. With the range of readers in our classroom, from beginner to advanced, it is important to organize our reading time around lots of choice. Accelerated Reader helps make daily reading choice work for us!
My middle school Language Arts students start the year reading years below grade level.
They work hard to strengthen their reading skills and prepare for high school. There are many different kinds of readers in my classroom: students who read with difficulty, students who read well but not in English, and students with interrupted schooling who have never learned to read at all. We read a variety of books, including picture books, easy readers, and simple nonfiction, and we read every day.
Accelerated Reader helps ensure that all my students are selecting and enjoying "just right" books. Reading practice quizzes, which students take on a computer after finishing a book, are an important ingredient for helping my varied students become stronger readers.
My Project
Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, we have some exciting new book collections! We have multiple versions of the Cinderella tale from around the world, books about parenthood and pregnancy, and a variety of high-interest chapter books for reluctant teen readers. Your support will allow us to obtain 108 reading practice quizzes for these new books which we will use over and over again for years to come. Keeping the books in our library organized helps students find more titles on an especially interesting topic. The box of labels will allow us to label books in our classroom to help students locate "just right" books in a favorite genre.
Accelerated Reader works beautifully in our classroom. My students enjoy taking the quizzes and watching their reading records grow longer and longer. Accelerated Reader brings structure and organization to independent reading in our classroom. These reading practice quizzes are an important tool for managing this complex reading classroom.
Independent reading time in our classroom is a beautiful sight; kids are tucked under tables, curled up on mats, reading in pairs with a couple of pillows or alone with a CD player.
Accelerated Reader and a well-organized library with color-coded labels are important parts of managing this varied group of readers. Your donation will help students strengthen reading skills, succeed in school, and become more productive citizens.
