Music and Moves: Rhythmic Activities in Adaptive PE

My students need soft balls and dance DVDs so they can develop their rhythmic movement and coordination, and hula hoops and speed ladders to improve agility.

My Students

My equipment budget for the year is $52. This budget is supposed to cover two team sports classes and two racket sports classes, as well as the adaptive PE class. Fifty-two dollars equals one basketball, three tubes of tennis balls, and two softballs. The kids deserve more.

My students all have multiple handicaps--both physical and mental, and some emotional.

Some cannot speak, and some have trouble walking. Some cannot hop, others cannot jump with both feet at the same time, or catch a ball. But all of them respond to music and will engage in activities when music is playing. They will try to limbo, play hopscotch, bounce balls, and dance--actions that are challenging to them. If they can learn to do these things, then they can play with other students and with their family members.

My Project

With the speed ladders and hula hoops, the students will have something safe to step over or jump over. They can learn to jump with their feet together or apart. The rhinoskin balls are very soft, so the students can learn to catch them without hurting themselves. We will use the music and dance DVDs to learn how to dance, both to keep physically fit and to improve mind-body connections. The more active the students, the healthier and happier they will be.

Please support this project so my students can develop their physical abilities, which will allow them to play with other people, to move safely, to dance at weddings, and to be included, rather than excluded.
