Learning how to write can be a daunting process for kindergarteners.
My students live in a rural setting, with beautiful hills and pine trees surrounding the area.
They have so much beauty around them, and it would be amazing to be able to capture that on film! The kids are eager to help and eager to explore, enjoying walks outside and adventures around the school. They love to notice the leaves on trees as they change and the beauty of clouds in the sky. Shadows fascinate them as well! They are amazing observers, and having a digital camera would be an amazing way to document the many wonders that they observe outside.
To tell you a little more about my class this year...they love to sing! They love to memorize poems and perform them in class. Being creative in the drama center is a highlight of their day as they put on puppet shows and create an imaginary world. It is a pleasure to be their teacher every day, and I love going to work each day!
My Project
A digital camera would allow me to use pictures to remind the students of a field trip, or a special place on campus, or a special mystery guest in the classroom. It would also allow us to walk around the school and take a picture of certain things that we see. For example, during our Brown Bear Unit where we study colors, we could walk around campus and take pictures of red things. Then we could print the pictures out and include some writing underneath the pictures and make a classroom book the kids could read over and over again. Having pictures as a resource and seeing these pictures in front of them would ease their anxiety and help inspire them to embark on this adventure of learning how to write. By looking at the picture while they attempt to write, they will be reminded of memories and will notice details that they might not have the first time. It is the beginning of descriptive writing and hopefully of a lifetime of love of writing!
I hope to use the digital camera to help the kids journal about their year, and create a memory book of their kindergarten year for them to keep forever.
I hope to show them their own personal progress too, and encourage them to see how many letters and sounds they have learned during the year. I desire to make a DVD slide show of all of the pictures from the year so the kids will be able to look back and smile on this life-changing year! Thank you for your potential funding of this project!
