My Students
Remember the first time a mystery captured your thoughts? Masterpiece is a unit based on the new book by Elise Broach that helps students get excited about solving an art heist mystery in addition to creating a video masterpiece of their own when finished.
My students are 24 of the most wonderful ten and eleven years olds here in Kansas.
Over half of them are from low-income families and do not speak English as a primary language. Making learning meaningful and able to connect for them is a challenge, but many have never seen art or been to an art museum before. These students have very little, but LOVE reading and constantly are looking for ways to connect to our world. We are a Title One building which specializes in English Language Learners.
My Project
This book unit will change student lives because it brings a mystery set in a modern time in a modern museum to life. It allows students to investigate an art crime and then create a video over the book posing as reports to "investigate" the art heist. The video camera and microphones would connect to laptops currently available in my classroom. Each student also needs a copy of the book.
This project is so meaningful because it brings a vague concept of an art heist to life by telling it through the eyes of a beetle.
Students from other countries learning languages have been able to make more connections to our English language through video making and writing scripts. These students being from low income families would also possibly never have the change to really make a video or star in one based upon family income levels.
More than half of students from low‑income households
