My Students

My students are 3rd-5th graders in a community with no easy access to art museums or art centers. Most of the children I teach have not had the opportunity to work with clay. Pottery lets the children express themselves through their artwork.

There are approximately 600 creative children that attend the school that I teach at in Georgia.

They are eager to try new things and have an exuberant desire to learn. Several of our state standards involve clay techniques; yet we do not have funding to purchase art supplies for this area of the visual arts curriculum. Through working with clay, students will be engaged in a multi-sensory endeavor, as they are involved both physically and mentally in the creative process.

My Project

By obtaining clay and glazes, my students will have the opportunity to work with media that is seldom used in elementary schools. They will gain insight into the nature of clay and make cross-curriculum connections as students use their natural environment and study of different cultures as a basis for many of their art projects. Students will experiment with stamping, sculpting, carving, and modeling techniques as they study about Georgia sea turtles, Native American pottery, and Oaxacan sculptures and Mexican pottery.

Your generous donation will provide a unique opportunity for hundreds of children in our school to create ceramic pieces, while making connections to other curriculum areas.

By funding this learning opportunity, you will be opening up a new world to my students as their successful experiences empower them beyond their artwork.
