Restocking After a Natural Disaster, Learning From the Gulf

My students need books of all varieties to supplement what we managed to salvage from the tornado and it seems logical to focus on natural disasters.

My Students

Although most of our students live in rural areas, very few are part of mass conservation or recycling efforts. I'm not exactly sure why but just in general, the people in our area have yet to become hyper-aware of the importance of environmental issues.

The students are witnessing the construction of our new school and of course parts of the area will be professionally landscaped.

However, I see this time as an amazing opportunity to teach the children about how to conserve, recycle and become aware of our surroundings and what we can do to help.

My Project

After losing our school in the tornado, the students have rallied to make do with tattered and torn books, modular units for classrooms and for most of the students, just watching the building erected is a new adventure. The work put into making a temporary set of classrooms was intensive but mostly for the adults. And, as adults are the ones building the new school, the students are able to see it as it is goes up piece by piece and the landscaping and learning can continue as we move into our building.

Our project is important for all the obvious reasons, education comes from reading and learning.

However, with these books, students can use the books for years to come and teach one another about the building of the new school and all the fund raisers and projects (an outdoor classroom) that took place to make the community proud.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
