Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember sitting in math class thinking, "I can't wait for language arts to start!" My students are the same way. They enjoy reading immensely, but shy away from numbers and math concepts. Reading about math would greatly improve their understanding of math concepts we learn every day.
My students attend a new school that was created to relieve overcrowding and decrease academic under-performance in our urban area.
20 of the 26 students are of limited language proficiency and need lots of support to express their ideas. I have found that children's literature really helps them build background knowledge about subjects that would be foreign to them otherwise.
My Project
I am asking for a library of books on math-related topics that will support my teaching and students' learning of a rigorous curriculum. It can be difficult for me to make math relatable to my students on my own and I have found that children's literature is a marvelous resource! Some books are available in Spanish which makes everything easier and these texts help math come alive for my newcomer students.
My project is important because my students are eager to learn and I am eager to support them in anyway I can!
However, they struggle with expressing their ideas about math. With math-related literature, we can set these children up for success and help them express their mathematical ideas in creative and thought-provoking ways. Thanks for reading and we'd greatly appreciate your support!!
