I teach in a rural school in the southeast that serves over a 1000 students. Over 50% of these students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are at a major socioeconomic disadvantage.
I have about 65 students I see daily in my Algebra 2 high school classroom.
These students are not Honors students and do not have a ton of motivation or support from home. They often find themselves working part-time jobs after school in order to help with family expenses. Most are able to balance school, work, and extracurricular activities, but need as much support as possible.
My students are your typical southern teenagers. They come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a variety of strengths and weaknesses to the classroom.
My Project
Graphing calculators in my Algebra 2 classroom will help develop and enrich student understanding of the advanced mathematical concepts covered by the curriculum. This technology will not only help students with their conceptual understanding of math, but will also be a catalyst for critical thinking. These calculators will allow students to access information much more quickly and in more detail than can be uncovered with pencil and paper. Becoming proficient at how to use a graphing calculator will also prepare students for success in other classes, their end-of-course assessments, and propel them to a higher ACT score.
Your generous donation will provide my students with an opportunity to dig deeper into math and expand their mathematical thinking.
In addition, it will provide my students with access to the technology that others have. Thank you for helping me prepare my students for success not only in Algebra 2, but also in their further endeavors.
