Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Wouldn't it be fascinating if a book could actually come alive and read itself out loud? This would very motivating for my students. Imagine if you came across a word you didn't know and the book pronounced it for you. How amazing would that be!
I teach in a primarily immigrant neighborhood.
Most of my students are learning English as a second language. Even though they struggle with learning English, all my students love learning and are highly motivated to improve their reading.
My Project
Some of my second graders are reading at or near grade level, which is great. But still many of my students are reading a year below grade level. They would like to become fluent readers but have not yet mastered the skills necessary to become good readers. What they need right now is more practice and listening to stories.
One way to accomplish this added exposure to reading and listening is through the use of LeapFrog Tag Readers and accompanying book titles such as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Little Engine That Could, and Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type. The Tag Reader is a handheld learning tool that provides audio feedback to a student. The device can read the story, pronounce a difficult word, or provide story context and background information. The Tag Reader can also provide a student with practice with necessary skills such as comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, and sequencing.
With these Tag Readers, my students will be provided with on-demand assistance when needed.
Gradually my less fluent readers will begin to become confident readers as they work at their own pace. Eventually these students will become independent readers, able to read on grade level with their peers. These once struggling students can become readers for life.
