Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our community has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the county! A group of teen girls wants to send a message to other teen girls about the reality of teen pregnancy by producing a public service announcement for our district's film festival. Please help them make a difference in their community!
We serve high school juniors and seniors who are credit deficient and cannot graduate at a traditional high school.
There are many reasons why high school students get behind in their credits. Each student has their own story. Perhaps they stopped attending school because they were bullied, had a parent with health problems who needed them at home, or had to take responsibility for younger siblings when a parent was incarcerated or simply unable to parent due to substance abuse. Or maybe the teen themselves got in trouble with drugs and/or the law. Or they could already be a parent themselves.
When students enter my classroom, they could be on probation, recently out of rehab, or current or former gang members. They could have social or mental disorders or could be academically gifted. They may or may not be living with their parent(s). Most have suffered some form of dysfunction that has prevented them from having a normal high school experience.
My Project
Having two student camcorders will not only enable a group of teen girls to produce a public service announcement on teen pregnancy, but it will also allow our continuation school site to be represented in the district's film festival for the first time since opening in 2003. It would inspire and promote a variety of 21st century learning opportunities for all students, now and in the future.
Because we are a credit recovery school, the primary focus is on core subject matter and our elective credit offerings are limited to the supplies we are able to procure.
Two camcorders would provide many different opportunities for students to express themselves.
