Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students at DMS are college bound. Even though they have been greatly under served by the educational system, the faculty and staff at DMS are dedicated to fostering creativity and inspiring students to make a change in the world.
Students in my classroom are extremely intelligent, though often times they must be reminded.
As part of the recently created Apollo program, they have extended days and additional tutoring support. This school has had historically low testing scores and is no stranger to violence on campus. Students are aware that they have been given the short end of the stick when it comes to their education but also know that with hard work they can and will make it to college.
My Project
Students have been greatly motivated with competition. They are team players, and support each other. By playing educational games students not only learn the content but also become reinvested in the importance of their education. I have requested the classroom Jeopardy! set and additional buzzers to allow students to learn, while having fun.
My students have been discouraged by their past experiences in education.
They have been in schools that are falling apart, are exposed to violence and gangs daily and often times have less than desirable home lives. School is a refuge for them. My classroom is a safe place where they know that they can and must succeed.
