I am requesting two kits that have a wide range of children's literature with hands-on materials to aid in students being able to retell the story.

My Students

Help us become fluent readers that are able to retell a story! We will be having fun and learning at the same time, an essential thing in a first grade classroom. The finger puppets will allow students to gain comprehension and use vivid vocabulary as they retell the stories during reading stations.

My students are unique individuals with a large amount of creativity and wild imaginations!

They range in age from 6 to 7 years old and come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. My class has a diverse population, including English Language Learners that truly benefit from communicating orally and using language as they interact with their peers during reading stations. Our community is a very rural area in Alabama where there is a large migrant population.

My Project

I am requesting two kits that have a wide range of children's literature with hands-on materials to aid in students being able to retell the story. Most of the materials are puppets and props that go along with each story. For instance, the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar has not only the caterpillar, but also all the food pieces that the caterpillar eats, along with the butterfly that he becomes. Imagine how fun it would be to retell the story using the items, creating a bank of ideas to inspire new stories.

This project is vital to my classroom.

First graders love to read and tell stories. Being able to give a summary of a story is an important component of comprehension. The kit is fun and inspiring to young learners. It will be able to be used year after year, allowing students the opportunity to retell some of the best in children's literature.
