Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a fourth year teacher that is in need of books to help my students read. My kindergarten students love to be read to and love to read.
The school is 82% economically disadvantaged.
I teach a classroom of 20 students at a Title 1 school with 80% of its students receiving free and reduced lunch. Most of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. They come without pencils, or paper, or folders, but thankfully, they come. Their little shirts aren't always clean, but their faces beam, and their eyes glow with the desire to be noticed and appreciated.
My Project
Books that are on the children's reading level will give them the confidence they need to read. The read-along kits help teach children the basic building blocks of reading—step by step! Each kit is based on a simple, themed story—with a big book and 6 student books, plus a read-along cassette and CD. All I have to do is pop in a recording, and it guides kids through the book in 3 progressive steps: First, children listen to the story as they follow along in their books. Then, the recording reviews key words and reads the book again as children track the text word for word. Finally, students are encouraged to read each page of the book aloud—either alone or with a teacher or partner!
Please help not only improve the reading skills of my students, but help my students understand the pleasures of reading a book! This will help develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime.
