Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

AVID is a college prep program that helps students in the AVID elective class successfully navigate their way TO and THROUGH a four-year university. The students meet together in the elective class for all four years of high school and they engage in content that helps build their college-ready skills as well as their college knowledge.

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap, so we serve students who might have one or more risk factors that would keep them from attending a four-year university.

In my class we have students who live in poverty, students who belong to ethnic and racial groups that are underrepresented in college, and students who will be the first in their family to attend college. They have all pushed themselves during their high school career to take more rigorous courses, like honors and AP courses, and engage in extra-curricular activities to develop both their academic and emotional preparation for college.

My Project

In the AVID program, we teach the students to use tools like agendas and binders to organize their academic materials to help them build success in their coursework. We provide them with agendas, binders, pencil pouches, Post It notes, highlighters, and dividers to help them create systems of organization that work for them.

But what good is a binder if your papers aren't hole-punched?

These automated hole-punches will allow AVID teachers to quickly and easily hole-punch class sets of academic materials to be disseminated to their students. Students can also use them to quickly and easily hole-punch materials they receive from other teachers as well.
