Teaching Economics With Children's Books

My students need children's books to help them teach younger students economics.

My Students

Children's books are more than just pretty pictures with rhyming words. They teach important concepts to young and old. Economics can be a difficult subject but there are many excellent books written for young people that teach important economic concepts such as scarcity, opportunity cost and trade.

My students want to be teachers, educators or pursue careers working with young people.

They are students living in an urban city and they want to give back to their community after graduating from college. They are passionate about increasing the number of teachers of different ethnicities and backgrounds. They all volunteer one day at a week at a local elementary school.

My Project

I have requested a number of kids' books that teach basic economic concepts. I will be reading these stories to my high school students to help them learn basic economic concepts. I will then use these books as part of a lesson on how to teach economic concepts to grades K-5. These same students will then be using the books to teach economics to the elementary students they work with.

Economics can be a difficult subject that most students have very little exposure to.

Reading a children's book can bring to life an otherwise difficult concept even for high school students. Most importantly this donation will allow future teachers the chance to practice their craft and pass on important economic lessons to young children.
