My Students

When my AP Language students came to me as freshmen, they were reading and writing significantly below grade level. In the three years that I have taught them, their literacy and analyzing skills have improved dramatically.

In Advanced Placement Language and Composition, my thirty-three students recite a creed every morning.

One excerpt of this creed is: "We will read critically, write effectively, and discuss intelligently. We will work together to PROVE our self-worth." Where you could come in is helping my students prove their self-worth. They are amazing young people, and even though they live in one of the most dangerous communities in the nation, they strive for excellence and to be heard. You could help them be heard; to give their voices the chance to change the way the rest of the world views them; to give them the opportunity to capture their stories in the genre of documentary.

My Project

I am requesting five Flipshare video cameras for my students. In my AP curriculum, we study, analyze, and write within five major themes: race, corporate America, the environment, gender, and socio-economics. We read essays and novels as well as study documentaries such as "The Cove" and "Food, Inc." At the end of the year, their massive task will be to get into groups to create a documentary on one of the five themes. They will then submit them to the Young Chicago Filmmakers Festival in hopes that one (or all!) will be selected. However, without video equipment, this project will never succeed.

Flipshare cameras are easy to use.

They are wireless and upload directly to a USB port. They are small enough to conceal in a pocket or backpack so that I don't have to worry about my students being robbed on their way to or from school. These cameras would give my students a voice that is generally not heard. This project will allow them to view the world critically and to argue their own claim within the themes of study. It honestly would be a life-changing experience for my students.
