Science Olympiad

My students need study aids and guides, building kits, and books on specific science topics like astronomy and microbiology in order to be well prepared for the Olympiad.

My Students

Fourth time's a charm? My high school has participated in the Rhode Island Science Olympiad for 3 years now, and we have never brought home a medal in any event. Every year has been overwhelming because we never have the money for the right materials and resources. We are hoping 2011 is our year!

I teach at a public school in an urban RI city.

We have about 1300 9-12th grade students in two houses within the school; a lower house of 9-10th grade students, and an upper house of 11-12th grade students. Our students love their sports so we have the characteristic cheerleaders & football players, but we also have many soccer players, tennis players, volleyball players and even golfers. Our lower house students come in needing much direction and support, but once they're juniors and seniors they stand up straight and start working towards their future. A survey of our upper house hallways will reveal budding mathematicians and environmentalists, chefs and nurses, teachers and architects.

My Project

I'm hoping these resources will help us be better prepared to compete against other high schools in Rhode Island in the 2011 Science Olympiad. Having these materials to prepare will help my students to feel confident, and this is half the battle. My students will feel supported in their quest to compete. So these resources won't be their only preparation, but they will be the jumping off point into exploring their chosen competition subjects.

I'm so hoping that 2011 at the Science Olympiad will be our year to win!

If students feel confident in their participation this year, more students will join the team next year. The more students that join the team, the more students who are exploring real world science deeply, and the more students who are becoming confident in their ability in science and technology.
