My Students

If you close your eyes and think of your best friend or a summer's day, do you picture an image in your mind or do you picture the words "Best Friend"? Chances are you visualized an image. Why? Because the brain naturally stores pictures. We need these Post Its to create visuals of our lessons.

My students are enthusiastic visual learners.

They need to see and do to learn the concepts in the classroom. With the Michigan economy ranking in the bottom half of the country, our middle class and mid-poverty student demographic is expanding. Our district is one of the largest in the state, yet receives the least amount of funding per pupil. Despite the fact that our state is on the economic decline, the students remain positive and willing to learn. They work hard each and every day on their academics and the life skills that I teach. Earning the coveted Integrity Bracelet is a goal each of the students strive for constantly.

My Project

These resources will assist in converting text into images. According to brain research done by Nickerson, the brain can store images effortlessly. The brain has to really work to store text. In our class we create large, vivid mind maps of the concepts we are learning. This enables us to organize the concept and recall it much better than re-reading a paragraph over and over.

This project is so important because it reaches those learners who have difficulty reading and remembering text.

The images we create on the Mind Map Post Its are more easily remembered and for longer periods of time. This simple classroom tool of "large sticky paper," is an asset to every visual learner and poor reader.
