My Students

The walls in the library are very bare and "institutional" looking. Our librarian is begging me and my students to paint and add some "life" hoping more students to use this fabulous facility. Inspired by Jacob Laurence's color and style, with music as our subject, we are excited to get started!

I teach a wide range of abilities.

This includes ages and levels in art, classes are mixed, and everyone wants to participate in this project. The advanced students have already drawn out a design, the intermediate students are plotting where the images will go on the library wall, and the special needs students have started coloring in the composition. We do this all while listening to the stereo, it is a fabulous work environment, and very close to our heart. SHS needs desperately to raise their FCAT reading scores. By encouraging the use of the library, through student involvement, and the "fun" of reading in such a fabulous environment is a sure step in the right direction.

My Project

Since I have the knowledge and resources in my classroom, and the groundwork has already been laid for this project,I am asking for the materials to see that this dream comes true. Students are already learning the connection between artist/style/meaning, cooperative problem solving, and the value of FCAT scores. To see their hard work come to fruition by actually putting the plan in action (painting images for all to see) the students will not only feel proud of their accomplishments but also make their mark in a space they call home, for their families to see, and that will last a life time.

This project is beneficial because literacy and cooperative learning are so important.

Not only will students benefit but also the entire Suwannee community including businesses and families. SHS is a main source for community involvement in this small rural area, everyone works very hard to ensure the success of the students. Adding life to our library will benefit so many in many ways.
