This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do kids still count on their fingers in fourth grade? Unfortunately, my students do because most of them have not yet mastered the basic math skills necessary to be successful with fourth grade math objectives.
I teach fourth grade in a low-income urban elementary school in Texas.
All my students are English Language Learners and nearly all of them are first generation immigrants. This is my students' first year in which they are receiving all-English instruction.
My Project
While I have been teaching for several years, this is the first time that I am teaching fourth grade math. As such, I have almost no math resources available to me and, unfortunately, it is my students who are suffering. They are severely lacking basic math skills such as recalling basic facts, rounding and simple place value. I feel I can best help bring my students up to grade level with hands-on materials, however, I do not have enough of these materials for each child to use them at the same time. As such, they often use them in teams, but that means that only a few students are actually manipulating the materials at a time and all students may not reap the benefits of the hands-on activity. If I had sets of manipulatives as well as resources and games to help my students practice their basic math facts, I know their math understanding would increase.
These resources are critical to my students' success in math.
Without them, they will continue to lack the most concrete math knowledge necessary for their continued math achievement. Your contribution will make a HUGE difference in my students' math experience in school. I truly appreciate your consideration.
