We Want to Travel the World Through Reading

My students need 40 subscriptions to Weekly Reader and multiple copies of 8 books.

My Students

I will never forget the teacher who really encouraged my love of reading. I want the same experience for my students. Many of the students today have not developed their love of reading. I want to change this by bringing in different types of literature to peak their interest.

Many of my students come from a low socioeconomic situation.

Books are not readily available in their homes. This has caused many of my students to come into third grade on lower level of reading then necessary to be successful. To compound this issue I have some students that face even more challenges, because their parents are illiterate. The students have so much potential and they want to be successful. The school they attend is in the middle of one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city. I want to be able to give them positive experiences through literature, so they will be able to become successful to move beyond their current conditions. These students have all the heart in the world and they just need resources to be the best they can be.

My Project

The Weekly Readers help give the students an insight into world events. Last year I saw many students were able to transfer the information they learned in the Weekly Readers to their writing. Using the Weekly Readers has lead to some incredible writing and progress from the students. I want to continue this with the Weekly Readers and add some great literature for the students to enjoy. I want to create literature circles this year and in order to do this I have to have book sets. Literature circles allow the students to develop strong reading skills and help them also develop the love of reading. One of the most important skills they learn is cooperative learning. In the business world without cooperative learning skills it is challenging to be successful. They are able to discuss with each other books and meanings. This will then lead to a deeper understanding and will transfer to higher test scores. This leads to the ultimate goal student success.

This donation will allow my students to have the resources they so desperately need to develop the necessary reading skills to be successful in all of their future endeavors.

With these resources I can help create that love of reading that could be raise their reading levels to the appropriate level that will allow them to be productive students and citizens.
