Whiteboards and Markers and Erasers, Oh My!

My students need whiteboards, Expo markers, and erasers to be able to participate in cooperative learning activities when reviewing content.

My Students

Remember what it was like reviewing for a test back in the day? We answered questions on a worksheet. Not anymore. Today students use whiteboards and engage in games like "Showdown" to review content. They learn while engaging in fun competitions!

Students sit in my Communication Arts class for over one hundred minutes every day.

That's a long time for anyone...especially middle school students. I try to engage them in various ways to keep them focused on learning. Middle schoolers love to talk,so I give them opportunities to have discussions with their classmates on a regular basis. We talk with our shoulder partner, members of our team, and even classmates clear across the room! Today's classroom is not the "sit and get" that I grew up with. Students are actively involved in their learning and those around them. They see content information in various forms. Simply reading something out of a book and memorizing information is a thing of the past.

My Project

I am trying to incorporate activities to accommodate different learning styles, but have found some needed resources to be cost prohibitive for our school and teachers. In order to utilize cooperative learning in our classrooms, I need whiteboards, markers, and erasers for every student. At this time I am dashing around the building attempting to borrow from other CA teachers as well as other content teachers. It would be extremely beneficial if each of the eighth grade CA teachers had a classroom set to use on a daily basis. These supplies will help my content teachers be one step closer to having student supplies in every classroom. These supplies also help me imbed social skills in the curriculum. A few of the social skills practiced in a recent whiteboard lesson were: encouraging contributions, praising, tolerance, and working together. This is just a sampling of the skills my students are working on that will benefit them in life outside of school.

These supplies will help me keep my students engaged and excited about learning.

Sometimes it takes a "dog and pony show" to reach certain students. These materials are another tool to add to my bag of tricks. Please help my classroom (and the other CA classrooms) with your support. CA teachers will appreciate it and so will our students.
