My students need a good digital camera to take pictures for the newspaper they are publishing for the school, and to help boost their self-esteem.

My Students

"Empowering students" is an awesome tool when it is used to help build self-esteem! Low readers often feel less confident when it comes to reading and writing. When put in the position of "editor", "photographer", and "interviewer" esteem builds along with the skills needed to publish a paper!

My students are low socio-economic children who are also low in reading.

They attend my class forty five minutes a day for extra help in reading and writing. They are Fourth graders that have had a hard time in reading for several years and have begun to feel "beaten down". This project is intended to not only motivate them, but to also make them feel special and successful. We have the computer, but lack a good digital camera to complete the paper. A camera will really bring their words "alive". I just know that this project will inspire the children!

My Project

This digital camera will empower my low readers to make other children "important" in the school newspaper. The children who are usually left out, will now be the ones who are "in charge" of choosing which articles to write about and what to photograph. The low readers will strive to be better readers, writers, and they will learn about photography in their endeavor to publish the school newspaper.

One digital camera will allow low readers the chance to raise their self-esteem and strive for better reading and writing goals.

It is time to try something different in the classroom! If they feel better about themselves, they will do better in the classroom. This project works on all three: self-esteem, reading, writing.
