Hoping To Land In The Luxury Of Lit Circles!

My Students

Nothing replaces the need for quality literature in a child's life. I have always struggled with finding a variety of reading options to challenge yet entertain my 6th grade accelerated readers. I could accomplish this through an array of lit circle books. After all, variety is the spice of life!

I come from a school of mixed poverty in a moderately small town in IL.

I see around 100 sixth grade students each day. Out of those 100 students, I teach one reading class to 25 sixth graders. This class is only one of two accelerated reading classes within the sixth grade. My sixth grade readers love to read and almost always have a book in their hands!

My Project

I chose to include a picture of a pilot from the Air National Guard for my photo. He was a presenter in my reading class after we finished reading the book, "Flight 116 is Down". This book is only 1 of 5 books I have as a lit circle option in my reading classroom. I receive only 50 dollars a year to spend on items needed for my classroom. I want to provide students with many more options and opportunities to learn through reading opportunities that I can't afford to provide. We do have novels, but the novels we have are worn out and have been around since I attended my school as a student many, many years ago. I believe my ability to provide a well-rounded reading curriculum for my students and give them the challenges they need and deserve could be attained more readily and easily through an improved reading selection within our classroom!

It is my mission and goal to offer students a classroom full of adventure, mystery, fantasy, history, entertainment, challenges, and many more educational opportunities all through the use of lit circle books.

Lit circle books offer students the chance to collaborate, improve reading skills and reading fluency, learn experientially, and select books within one's reading preference and reading level. Imagine the possibilities! ~Today a reader, tomorrow a leader~ M. Fuller
