My Students

"If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you!". That is Michigan's motto which is on our flag. I have been privileged to travel this great state, unfortunately my students rarely leave their Eastside neighborhood. Resources to truly discover our state would bring our study of Michigan Alive!

My classroom is in an inner-city public school.

This Michigan school is in one of the poorest cities in our state. Our learning community is made up of 34 students, 13 who are bilingual. Our school, which is the oldest in the district, serves over 400 students, most who are very poor. Regardless, they are eager to learn and love to be read to. We start most of our social studies learning time with a book about our topic of study. These books are also for students to read, or use for research at school. Students can check them out to read at home. Our reading material about Michigan isn't available. We use old textbooks that aren't up to date. The resource materials that go with the textbook are no longer available. Online access for students is very limited, so research materials aren't readily available. These books will serve students for years to come at our school.

My Project

Literacy based instruction brings a whole new world of learning to kids. Instead of reading old text books, and answering questions at the end of the chapter, or just fill in the blanks on the workbook pages, (boring....) we can use books as an effective and fun way to learn. Using the literature allows in depth discussions. We use this theme based style of learning to allow us to include content areas such as reading, writing, science and math as we read & write about Michigan. Activities include: Research projects that use photos, graphs, and narratives, projects where they will use real life skills to provide clear and detailed information about our state, engaging in the writing the process, arranging graphs and picture as a way to provide more information, and creating a PowerPoint to integrate technology. Various styles of learning are addressed as we read, listen, discuss, sing, dance, write poetry & research projects which meet all the needs of all of my kids!

Your support for our project will purchase the much needed books to use in our Studies about Michigan.

Can you imagine learning about your state with outdated materials, boring dittos and workbook pages. Perhaps being able to learn about Michigan using literature based activities will motivate my students to travel and discover our "Great Lakes State" Please help my students to learn using this exciting and hands on style of learning. Please give us your support, I promise to give mine.
