Wouldn't it be great if you could just graph the equation in 20 seconds and be ready to discuss it with the rest of the class rather than spending 15 minutes plotting points?

My students attend a public high school in California.

We are a very diverse group with over 30 different languages spoken by our students and their families. We range from very, very low income to middle class. My students are great in English or Art or sports or whatever their niche may be. They donate their time helping others; they perform service for the school. They work hard, they have fun. They just struggle in math.

My Project

I work with students in danger of not passing the math portion of the CAHSEE (CA High School Exit Exam) or have already failed one or more times. I teach a class that focuses on the very basics of Algebra. There are several types of equations that we study where we need to compare the equation to the graph so that we can see how changing the equation changes the graph. The calculator allows them to put up to 10 graphs on the screen and DISCOVER how to change a graph rather than spend time drawing them. This helps tremendously in lowering anxiety when discussing graphs. That is just one example of how they are used. The Exit Exam class used to be limited to 20 students to ensure more one-on-one instruction, but with the budget crisis in California, I now have over 40 students in that class. I also teach Statistics, Algebra 2 and Pre-Calc. The TI-84 calculators are designed specifically for Statistics (but have all the capabilities necessary to go to Calculus and on to college).

My project is very important to my students (and me) because without passing the California High School Exit Exam, they will not earn their diploma and that means that the school has failed as well.

The smile on their face when they hear they've passed the test is worth all the effort. Their pride just radiates.
