Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Marian Wright Edelman is quoted as saying that, "Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it."
My students are high school freshmen and sophomores.
Our school is attended predominantly by students that come from low-to-middle income homes. My freshmen are a part of a new Animation Pathway that will help them graduate high school with all of their graduation requirements, as well as their A-Gs, and a background in Animation. We are a traditional high school but are one of the pilots in the state of CA for this pathway program.
My Project
Traditionally, English and Art have not been introduced together. English is usually about writing and reading. In my classroom, I like to incorporate artwork into my activities so that students that are not the best test-takers are able to show me that they have understood the content. For me, it is another form of assessment while also something that helps decorate my classroom. I like to spice up vocabulary activities by having students create illustrative dictionaries. When we learn about plot, students use a short story to create a comic strip.
Art supplies are an important part of my English curriculum.
It helps students that aren't left-brain dominant show me in their right-brain ways that they understood the content. Life isn't black and white, or graphite and white, so I would appreciate help with purchasing art supplies to enable my students to "show" me what they've learned.
