My students need to experience other forms of dance besides hip hop, by attending The Chocolate Nutcracker performance by the Debbie Allen Dance Academy.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I didn't know I could do that...To hear a child say these words means that they do not know, nor understand their full potential. Many student are limited by the their own thinking, their families' thinking, or their cultural traditions. They have no exposure to other dance/performance styles.

I teach at an inner city, high poverty school.

Over 50% of my students are working below grade level, yet working very hard to get where they need to be. Half of my students are English Language Learners, but they all are learning Standard English. I have a very vibrant and active group. They enjoy movement activities because they allow them a nontraditional way to express themselves. None of my students have ever attended a formal theatre with a professional company. They have never been exposed to other forms of dance besides hip hop, or their cultural dances. There are no arts being offered at my school due to budget cuts. Many of our families cannot afford to put their kids in dance or other art forms, simply due to the cost.

My Project

By funding this field trip to see The Chocolate Nutcracker you will enable my students to see dancers that look like them, doing dances and movements many of them did not think was possible. A trip like this will broaden their horizon and create motivation for them to do something other than the traditional hip hop or cultural dances that they are used to. A trip like this will awaken in many of them a desire to dance and perform. The students who don't leave such a performance with the desire to dance, will leave with a new appreciation for theatre. They will have learned proper theatre etiquette. They will have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the arts, through one of the top dance companies today.

A trip that allow students to participate in the arts is so important because for many of them, this will be their only opportunity to do so.

Fewer and fewer arts opportunities are being offered in the schools, and the arts offered outside the school have a price tag that is often too expensive for our families. Through a performance such as this, students will learn to take themselves out of the hip hop and cultural dance box. They will learn that there are other outlets of expression they are capable of.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
