My Students

Do you remember the feeling of a brand new book? How crisp the pages were, the way it smelled, how proud you were to carry it around and call it your own? I teach seventh grade English in Georgia at a high-needs community charter school, where success is our top priority.

Without a doubt, my students put everything into their education (including extra hours and Saturday school) and it is my hope that I may give them everything possible in return.

Being a school in a high-needs area means that many of my students, at 13-years-old, have seldom, or never, had the opportunity to call a brand new book their own. Their interest in a subject exponentially grows when they can bring a book home each night to continue their reading. Our classroom discussions are more rigorous and my students come in each day excited to share what they read at home. Last year was our first year in which every student received a book for each unit. Students began taking advantage of every opportunity they had to read...walking in the halls, finishing work early, or sitting on the bus. Their success paid off. As a school, we surpassed the success of the state of Georgia on the end of year exams. Some grade levels passed by as many as 18 percentage points higher!

My Project

While a lot of our success can easily be attributed to the hard work and determination of the teachers and students alike, I know that the fact that students were able to make reading a part of their daily lives aided them even more. For my next unit, entitled "Steinbeck", I need copies of three different novels written by Steinbeck himself. While each book is based upon the same central theme, students in my classes will be divided into three different groups based upon their reading levels, to increase their success rates. It is for this reason that I need copies of all three novels. The students will be working with these novels daily, furthering their reading skills, reading comprehension skills, and rigorous literature discussions. My students' interest levels will skyrocket when they realize they get to have complete ownership of this book throughout the unit.

Your help will ensure that my students truly value learning and make it a part of their daily life.

Not only will they be discussing and analyzing literature in class, but they will be given the opportunity to take the book home and further their skills by continuing their practice at home. Your donation today will effect my students' life now and well into the future.
