Leap Into Reading!

My students need four Tag Readers and Tag Reader books.

My Students

My students are not able to just "pick up a book and read," because they have disabilities that prevent them from learning to read. Yet, they love to try to read. Tag Readers are a great way for non-readers to be able to read a book, page by page.

I am fortunate enough to teach a very special group of kids that are affected by mental disabilities, autism, or other health impairments.

Our school is located in a rural area of South Carolina. Our school, like other schools across the nation, is suffering from major budget cuts. We have a free/reduced lunch rate of almost 90%, which reflects the economic status of our community.

My Project

My students enjoy the few Tag Readers that we received from a previously funded project. They get to use them about once a week. With the addition of four more readers and new books, students can enjoy "reading" for themselves on a daily basis. I am amazed at how much information they can retain from using these resources. I am also amazed at the sense of accomplishment they have when they declare that they read a book without anyone helping them!

I think that one of the greatest benefits of reading is the independence and confidence that it instills in children.

The only way that some of my students are able to read for themselves is using Tag Readers. As a result of using these readers, they are able to reap the benefits of reading, despite their disabilities. Thank you for your help!! We are truly grateful.
