Haitian Students in Florida Need Books in Creole

My students need books written in their native language as they transition into a new country, culture and language.

My Students

Imagine the difficulty of moving to a new country and enrolling in a school where they speak a different language. Imagine how much more difficult that would be if your move was because of a devastating earthquake that destroyed your home, your school, and your town.

A number of the students at our Title I, high poverty elementary school have come here from Haiti speaking only French Creole.

I see them struggle everyday to learn the language while also learning math, science and other subjects. I see the determination in their eyes to master the challenges that face them and I am inspired. I cannot begin to imagine how difficult the task before them is. I can only try to make it easier. Some of our students arrived here in South Florida last spring after the terrible earthquake that ravaged their country, destroyed their homes and disrupted their lives. They are adapting and working hard to become part of our community. Their parents are caring and supportive.

My Project

What we would like to provide for our students is a library collection of books, for elementary school children, written in their native language. I recognized the incredible need for these books when I adopted an afternoon program of sustained silent reading and realized that I have no books to offer my student from Haiti. As I was having the students select books and novels to read in the afternoon, I realized that he could not read any of the books that I had to offer. No one in the school had any books written in Creole. I thought how comforting it would be for him to have a book that he could read and enjoy. The library resource contains 100 books written in Creole that could be enjoyed by countless students for years to come.

Reading is so important.

I want all of my students to read and to enjoy reading. I want my Creole speaking students to be able to share that experience with their classmates. I want them to be a part of all aspects of our classroom experience.
