This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Paper maps are soooo last century! We live in a Google Earth world. 4th grade is when California kids learn about latitude and longitude, and I'd love for my students to learn about it through GPS and Google Earth overlay mapping.

My students are incredibly smart, fast learners who come from impoverished backgrounds.

They love learning new things, especially when it comes to technology. They can't afford much of it at home, but at school they've been making iMovies, working with GarageBand, and learning how to use Microsoft Office to make newspapers and Powerpoints. They are hungry for new ways of exploring the world.

My Project

I'm requesting two rugged, relatively inexpensive GPS units for my 4th grade classroom. I'm also asking for two digital still cameras and a memory card. This year I thought I would use the GPS units to teach latitude, longitude, and direction by mapping/geotagging our school and neighborhood. Students could use the cameras to take pictures of sites of interest at specific coordinates and write text about the location. The text could be non-fiction description, personal narratives and anecdotes, poems, anything at all tied to that specific location. All of this data (coordinates, still pictures, text) could then be used to create an overlay in Google Earth that could be published for all the world to see.

Learning needs to become integrated with 21st century skills and technology.

Students don't live in a paper and pencil world anymore, and they shouldn't be limited to creating in a paper and pencil world. Please give my students the opportunity to create cutting-edge, exciting multimedia projects to learn the state standards and envision a new, exciting future!
