Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students already make video projects for school! In fact, they are so creative they have learned how to use cell phones, inexpensive still cameras, even the built-in camera on our laptops. But I want them to channel their creativity into movie-making, not camera-finding.

I run a computer lab in an urban public school.

Most of my students live in poverty and many are from immigrant families. Most have access to video games and cell phones, but few have a computer at home that they use as a learning tool. My job is to teach them how to use technology, not be used by it. My students watch a lot of television, so I partnered with a colleague to lead a group of older students in creating a newscast for our school. The students will use short videos to tell the story of their classrooms, teachers, and school, all from their perspective.

My Project

My students need one flip-style video camera. With today's tools, you don't need tens of thousands of dollars to make high quality video, but we don't even have a basic flip-style video camera. My students should spend their time making videos, not figuring out how to carry a laptop around the room pretending it is a camera. The Kodak Zi8 is a great tool for student filmmakers because it is simple to transfer the movie files to computer for editing. And, just like correspondents on television, the students will be able to use a hand-held microphone when they are interviewing!

My students are not like me--they have grown up surrounded by a digital world.

They have the skills, the interest, and the desire to use technology to share their ideas, to communicate. I want them to become better filmmakers, not merely creative camera operators.
