My Students

Hello! I am a third grade teacher at a high-needs school in the inner city. I have a classroom full of the best students a teacher could ask for! My students are wonderful - inquisitive, thoughtful, and enthusiastic. Every day, I look forward to coming in and working with them.

It is my job to ensure that my students reach the goals they set for themselves in math, writing, and reading.

It is the last one, reading, that I’ve found my students most struggle with. There are a lot of reasons why and a lot of factors at play here, but the one I’ve found to be the most challenging to overcome is a lack of background knowledge. Many of my students have not had the exposure to even basic childhood literature - when asked last year, over half did not know who Cinderella was. This is sad, because many other books build off of that one fairy tale and without that background knowledge, they’ll be lost.

My Project

In my classroom library, I would love have the 40 books I've requested from an important, but often neglected genre: fairy tales. I want to see various copies of stories such as Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Twelve Dancing Princesses, Little Red Riding Hood, etc. Fairy tales are a great addition to any classroom library. Not only will my students enjoy reading them independently, but I will also be able to build a unit of study around them. Due to their predictable plots, fairy tales are an excellent way to teach character, setting, plot, rising action, climax and resolution concepts to students. and ideas to the students in a fun and exciting way. Importantly, picture books are often equally as challenging to read as many chapter books and will provide students with the additional picture support that they need.

I want to give my students the opportunity to experience losing themselves in a good fairy tale while also improving their reading skills, abilities, and background knowledge.
