My Students

I can't believe it! Our Opera Club has out grown my classroom. We need to move to the multi-purpose room.

All 6th grade students at our elementary school are welcome to join the Opera Club.

All that is required is curiosity. And this year will be our largest group yet. Students bring their lunch to my room on Friday's and watch an opera DVD. Afterwords, we have very lively discussions. One surprising aspect of opera my students love, is the variety of languages. Most of my students speak Spanish as their first language, and someone always points out words that sound similar to Spanish.

My Project

My classroom is no longer large enough to host our weekly Opera Club meetings. Each year, more and more students want to come to see what all the singing is about. Most of them have heard of opera, but they have no idea what to expect. This year, we will set up in the multi-purpose room. We already have speakers and a DVD player that were generously donated. Now, all we need is a LCD projector to show the opera DVDs. This way, we won't have to disconnect my classroom projector and move it every week.

My students know that when I attend the opera, I am one of very few African Americans in the theater.

My students, who are of various ethnic backgrounds, maybe the generation to add to the ethnic diversity of a live opera performance.
