My Students

Not all students have someone at home to read to them, often due to a language barrier or absence of an adult in the home. While audio tapes/CDs are great resources, students only have access to the tangible books in the classroom. With hand held technology, the online library offers unlimited books.

Our readers range from age 5-13, Kindergarten to 5th grade.

A large number of students are second-language learners and/or qualify for free/reduced lunch. The students served in my classroom are the students selected for the highest level of reading intervention; however, we believe everyone can learn to be a better reader and it is our school-wide goal to encourage a love of reading with our students and have them extend reading to other family members in the home.

My Project

Two students will be able to read a leveled text online together using the Apple iPod Touch. The iPod Touch allows students a vivid, active learning experience as they read and listen through individual headphones (using a 2-way splitter). While the iPod Touch will always remain in the classroom, it will allow for more individualized instruction with small groups while those students on the iPod Touch can read personalized leveled text. The use of technology will also increase reading interest, especially when the majority of struggling readers have minimal interest in reading since it is such a challenge. Some of the youngest students in today's age are very familiar with the use of technology, particularly the iPod Touch, and have used one before. Such technology will also be a money-saving tool, as books/cassettes/CDs will not need to be replaced nor will they be lost, because the online library (United Streaming) offers a vast collection of fiction/nonfiction texts, author highlights and documentaries.

With your generous donation, you will help our classroom utilize technology to increase interest in reading, provide a surplus of texts appropriately leveled for any age of reader, and make an impact on small learning groups which allows for quality, student-centered instruction.
