My students need 20 copies of the play "West Side Story" before going to see it live at San Francisco's Orpheum Theater!

My Students

100% of my students have never been to a professional play, despite growing up in San Francisco, which is arguably the cultural capital of the US. I want my students to read the play "West Side Story", and then fundraise in order to go see the play at San Francisco's Orpheum Theater.

My high school special education students range from aspiring doctors to inspiring dancers.

Several students spend weekends dancing for money for their families in the touristy areas of San Francisco. Attending a school that regularly ranks in the bottom 5% of schools in the entire state of California, which ranks 48th at the national level, the students are often deprived of experiences with the arts. My students want to read and go see "West Side Story", to the extent that they are willing to spend their free time fundraising to buy their own theater ticket. They just need a copy of the book to read.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of "West Side Story" for the students to read. While studying the play, the students will fundraise daily, in order to ensure that we raise enough money to go see the play at San Francisco's beautiful and famous Orpheum Theater.

This project is so important, because oftentimes, students in low-resourced communities have little or no exposure to the arts.

This project will take teenage San Francisco natives to the Orpheum Theater for their first time ever, and ideally cultivate a timeless love of the arts in all of these students.
