R.I.F ( Reading is Fundamental)

My students need reading books for our Sustained Silent Reading period.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is an art that has been lost over time. Because this art has been lost my students do not have access to a larger world. Their imaginations are stifled. Because they do not have this access, they lack in their academic subjects because they can not imagine.

I serve a variety of students predominately Hispanic African American.

We share a building with another small school, my students so not have their own space. However, they are motivated, they believe they can achieve great things. This project will give them direct examples of students who are like them, that achieved what they thought to be the impossible.

My Project

Everyday in our school we have a Sustained Silent Reading period. During this twenty minutes I want my students to regain their imaginations, to go places they have never before been. I want my students to dream of fair off and nearby places, I want them to see themselves in literature. This project will help them because they will have access to a variety of traditional, and contemporary new age books, that provide them with worlds they do not know exist. These books can show them a small idea of what they could do, they will spark a fire.

Lastly this project is important because it will aide what I as a teacher do in my classroom on a daily basis.

These books will allow student to envision the places we study, the cultures, the people. These books have the potential to open the students mind to a larger world. This is why Reading is Fundamental.
