Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine being a visual-only learner and having to listen to teachers lecture every period in High School? Well my Special Ed. students face this problem almost every day. My kids are unable to see and manipulate what they are being taught, and are forced to rely on lecture-style teaching.

My students suffer from a variety of learning disabilities, specifically auditory processing disorders, which makes it difficult for them to understand what they hear in class.

On top of that, my students are from one of the most poverty-stricken cities in California. Our school is underfunded, and my kids are often the ones that are most disadvantaged. The graduation rate for my students is barely 1 in 5, and too often my students drop out because the work is so difficult for them. The students in my class desperately need to be taught using a variety of learning modalities, but are almost never given access to material in such a way because of lack of materials and supplies.

My Project

Having a projector in my classroom would totally change the academic experience for my students. First, it would allow my kids to see and play with material in a way that they are currently unable to. I will be able to play movies, pull up images, and have access to skill-boosting games that would not only interest my students, but also help them understand difficult concepts like evolution or wavelengths. Because my students struggle with more classical approaches to teaching, a resource like a projector would help me teach to each student's individual strength, and allow me to better personalize my lessons to my students. Secondly, a projector would help me re-interest and re-motivate my students in their education. Most of my students are at a great risk of dropping out of high school or worse, and having technology in their class will help show them that their education is important. I hope to restore their confidence and belief that school can be a fun as well as important place.

My project is important because it will be an educational support for students.

It will allow me to diversify my teaching style for different learners, and help show a group of discouraged special ed. students that their education is just as important as kids from more affluent districts. Finally, it will allow my kids to have access to the world that's around them, something most of them have never had.
