Teaching Students There Is A Sunrise Over Fallujah

My Students

Fallen Angels, by Walter Dean Myers, captured our students' imaginations and I want to give them the opportunity to continue the story with "Richie's" nephew in "Sunrise Over Fallujah". War is a hard subject to teach and learn about, but novels allow for an open dialog that gets missed in other forms of teaching.

My students are young and question everything.

They don't understand war or soldiers or governments, or how each play a part in the overall game. They are hard-working and many will opt not to attend college for many different reasons. The military is a valid future option for a lot of my students. Many believe that it is an easy life. Others believe it is their only way out. Neither of these options is correct, but books like this allow for more open discussions about what service entails.

My Project

The book I am choosing takes off with a young soldier who goes to Fallujah to fight for his country like his uncle. While his uncle was drafted, he volunteered. This tale is a good look into the current war and how it affects those soldiers fighting and how they deal with their battles.

I believe that every student should spend more time focusing on what is happening in Southwest Asia.

It is important to allow students to understand and form opinions about their world.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
