Healthy Eating - Middle School Style

My Students

Obesity in America is at an alarming high, and diabetes is becoming one of the biggest health threats in the nation - and something must be done! I am going to start the fight in my classroom. It is time to teach students how to make healthy eating choices and how to change the way they eat.

My students are 7th graders and they have just reached the age where they are starting to make some of their own food choices.

The habits they will form will affect them the rest of their lives. In my language arts class, I want to change our reading time into something that will affect change, not only for them but their families. We are going to learn about healthy eating and food choices- while improving reading comprehension and literacy. With budget cuts happening everywhere, there are no health classes and PE classes are often half time and shared with electives. The result is that kids just aren't getting good information about being healthy- and our country is becoming more obese everyday. This year I want to make a change in the lives of my students and there is no better way than to teach them about healthy eating choices and truth behind how their choices effect them now and will effect for years to come.

My Project

I am truly passionate about teaching my students how to make healthy eating choices. First, I want to use the book Chew on This to teach them about the fast food industry and how the process by which food makes it to the supermarket. After using Chew On This - not only to teach them about their food choices - but reading comprehension, I want them to use the Eat This Not That series to come up with good alternatives and ideas for making these healthy food choices. Their final assignment will be to teach their family, and other students about these new eating/healthy choices. Since I also teach a broadcast class, and I will have students give healthy eating tips on the BNN - the news network show that is broadcast to the entire student body each day. This will be a dynamic and life changing project.

If you want to know how important this project is - stop reading this and go outside and count the number of people who are overweight.

Once you do that, you will know that this project is vitally important! Please help me help my students live an obese-free life, and learn to make healthy eating choices now...not later in the form of fad diets or being forced to eat better after their second open heart surgery (paid for by your insurance company).
