Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 5th grade teacher with 32 students, more than half of which are below grade level, and 3 have specific learning disorders.

My students are motivated to learn but it is very difficult for them to catch up.

I do all I can to engage and motivate them to learn. Just recently, we began taking public transportation to go on fieldtrips because our school doesn't have the funding to order school buses. Using public transportation has been quite a challenge but it has allowed us to visit museums and aquariums. It has been great but many times these fieldtrips lead to other questions, and I believe that the students should be able to find answers as quickly as possible while it is still fresh on their minds. I know that there are many programs that will intrigue my students and answer their questions. A netbook will help them to read on any topic that may arise but the bottom line is that it will help them to "enjoy reading".

My Project

Imagine being 10 years old and using public transportation to go on a fieldtrip. After an hour of being on the metro, you arrive at the museum, and everything is going well until a question arises that needs to be answered. A netbook is perfect for students to share as they make their way through the museums or aquariums. They will be able to bookmark and take notes on what they are learning. A netbook will be a tremendous learning tool the will bring enjoyment back to reading & learning. Not to mention that it is small enough to be able to conceal from leering eyes.

How can one netbook make a difference?

One netbook computer shared among 32 students will give each one the opportunity to take notes and make a personal connection. A walk through the museum will become a lifelong experience. That's a big difference for 32 deserving students during one academic year. You can make that difference.
