My Students

Learning to love books was so easy for me. I grew up in a time where there were only three TV channels and children read on their own or listened in Mama's lap. My students have cell phones, video games, computers, and Ipods. What is their impetus for reading?

I am in a community school with wonderful children who are reasonably well-behaved.

Most come from lower to middle income families. I give very few low grades, but they would be so much higher if the reading skills improved. They no longer read when work is finished. They try to sneak and text in class or just sit there doing nothing. There are a very few in each class where reading was a priority at home. Our school is in a rural area where the predominant activity is farming and small businesses. Not a lot of time is invested in reading.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of the novel "Schooled" by Gordon Korman. We have thirty-five minutes for reading at the end of the day. This book is about a boy who has never been to school and is being raised by his hippie Grandma who homeschools him. She gets hurt when she falls out of a tree and he has to go live with a school guidance counselor. He is forced to go to school for the first time and it is middle school. Imagine going to school for the first times as a teenager. He wears longer hair and clothes made of hemp and becomes the target of bullies. Bullying is one of the problems in our school. I think this book will not only promote reading, but will also give information on handling those who pick on others. This novel is high interest and has a timely topic. Last year it was one of the most requested in my classroom library.

I challenged my students to tell me one job that is not impacted in some way by reading and they could not.

With a set of the same books I can guide their reading. We can have discussions about bullying and ways to avoid offenders. Also we have a "novelmania" night where we can share projects based on what we learn. We can define and use new words from the book which is a plus. Please help us by supporting the effort to read more and stop bullies in their tracks!!! It would mean so much!
