Inner-City American History

My students need an LCD projector so that I can illustrate American History, show documentaries, and take them on virtual field trips.

My Students

"There is world outside of the hood and I want you to see it." These lyrics by Dizzee Rascal, a British rapper, fit my kids in America perfectly. Many haven't been past downtown. Most have never traveled. I intend to show them our great country. I want them to experience our history.

I am a high school American History teacher in Pennsylvania.

My classroom has a chalkboard and desks for my students and I. We share this space everyday, and we do our best with the limited resources we have. My students are overwhelming African-American from lower income households. They are tough, strong-willed, and not the easiest crowd to deal with, but they are also articulate, passionate and fiercely independent. They are children who deserve the best but have often not been given it. Our school is in a tough part of town, and houses about two thousand students. We have few funding sources and teachers are often left to their own devices to get the resources required for classroom success. I have no access to technology beyond what I bring from home, and my students cannot access Internet resources beyond what is available on their mobile phones.

My Project

A projector will allow my students to see the United States through the lens of Ansel Adams, the documentarian eye of Ken Burns, or the artistic vision of Terrence Malick. It will allow me to expose them to contemporary American artists and the myriad images from the past that have defined our collective consciousness. We will be able to do virtual field trips to destinations around the United States, access Internet resources as a class, and view documentaries that focus on the American experience. My students will learn about their country beyond what their textbook can illustrate. They'll hopefully begin to see the entire United States as belonging to them and take ownership of its future. I want them to connect with American history on an visceral level beyond the anger and frustration some of them feel.

What I intend to do in my classroom is to open the door to America and show a group of disenfranchised students that their country is great, vast and belongs to them.

They are tomorrow's future leaders and their knowledge of our collective past will help them map out our future.
