My Students

How would one paint a sunset he had never seen? Where would one begin to express through art the emotions felt in the soul? I teach 170 inner-city students to imagine outside of their normal confines. I have a strong cross of cultural diversity and ethnicities learning to coexist.

Focusing the student’s imagination on a neutral imagery provides a ground of communication and unity of direction.

Because we are a low income area, materials are not available to present the students’ work matted, wrapped, and presented in show format for portfolios, student art shows and competitions. Can you imagine? That's all it takes to hook a teenager into the realm of creating. He then begins to dream of possibilities beyond his personal present experiences. However, the process for presenting this imagery the students create is a difficult thing to convey without the necessary equipment. This is where “WOW, Look, I Made That Myself” will provide so many options for a multitude of underprivileged students to make a notable presentation of their valued artwork.

My Project

When presenting paintings or drawings that the students have created, we currently only have access to construction paper and occasional poster board for mounting. Most of the local student art shows ask that student work be mounted on matte boards and cellophane coated for protection. So it is often an embarrassment to the students to hang their work in the same areas as those that are adequately completed for presentation. It is the finished presentation, not the quality of the work they produce, that is keeping our students from being able to compete for the awards and recognitions presented in these student shows. Thus, they are left at an extreme disadvantage simply because of the lack of funding and access to necessary supplies. My students need to be able to see that their work is of a quality presentation to believe that they can be as successful as their peers from other programs in the area. They need to view their work with pride as it is presented in standard show format.

Students seeking post secondary education need exposure of their artwork to compete with their peers.

Without the equipment and proper show exposure, the student will be left ill-equipped for college acceptance in the arts. S/He simply needs the accolades and resume building from show entry and presentation of artwork to build a strong portfolio. Then s/he can express with confidence the pride of “WOW, Look, I Made That Myself” as attributed to his/her growing abilities to produce artwork.
