Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I wince every time I hear comments about the accommodations my students need to be successful. They need accommodations for reading, writing, cutting and drawing. They need instruction in different formats. The accommodations are necessary to just allow access to learning.

The students in my classroom have special needs such as autism, learning disabilities like dyslexia, or emotional disabilities including clinical depression and mood disorder.

And many of the students also have physical disabilities or health impairments, including seizures, allergies and sensory issues. They are students who are often part of families who have just immigrated to the United States, and who do not speak English at home. Our school has 43 different languages spoken in the homes of our students, and 53% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunches. And yet, they are also students who support their community through canned food drives, working with the Red Cross, or Habitat for Humanity and local soup kitchens. We are the most diverse high school in our county.

My Project

Technology can make writing easier for the students since they do not have to fight to read their handwriting. It is also a patient tutor who will review over & over again. The iTouch can allow a student to read a book while listening, or act as a dictionary integrated into a book. iPod Touches are becoming increasingly popular as a method to put technology into the hands of students with disabilities because of the large number of apps that meet their needs. The iTouch is also significantly cheaper, but can provide the same access for some students. As our district grows, and budgets continue to be tight, technology is being removed from our classes. I had 4 computers from the district; now I have 2, and 1 is slaved to the interactive whiteboard. The 2 laptops cannot be on the network, so we have 1 Internet capable computer.

I know that technology benefits the students that I teach, because we were given 2 laptops from Best Buy under their Te@ch Award program in 2008.

which is where the iTouch comes in. My students need to learn how to use technology that is easily available in their lives, and many of my students have cell phones or iTouch devices.
