Bringing Books to the Bigger Screen: Stars Are Born

My students need a new projector, they have none, and would really shine with such a powerful tool for seeing so much of the world that they have yet to see!!!

My Students

Sometimes dreams must begin from inspiration, that is, you need to draw on vast experiences and people who have touched your life, and my students believe everyday in the chance to change the world. However, almost all of them have never been out of our city.

My students attend a Charter Middle School in a school district that like so many other ones, has been ravaged by draconian budget cuts and an ever ending migration of teachers and classmates to the suburbs.

They have been portrayed in the main stream media as such rough and tough young individuals, but those of us who are with them on a daily basis, find such imaginative and curious about life young people, they give you hope. Our students revel in traveling through the mainstream electronic media, especially seeing the images that so many of us have used to connect them to the world that they seldom see. My students become so engaged with the world around them when they are exposed to it. They love science, math, and our school mission is to expose minority students to the potential of the health related fields, I cannot underscore how important it is to stimulate and empower these young and hungry minds.

My Project

Imagine if you will a street on which you live has every other house boarded up. A cycle of violence that has abated, but still leaves you with around the clock on site police at most corners. Requesting an LCD projector almost seems absurd as a means for transporting students away from their immediate neighborhoods, and yet it does! We will be able to explore on an educational scale serious content, and on such a grander vista, a world that is truly waiting to be exposed to students who really will be extremely challenged to ever make a simple connection to anything outside of their zip code. Each day we will be able to view an enriched level of intellectual stimulation that will reinforce daily gateway skills that we are engaged in mastering. Students will learn so much more than the one text book that we have as our resource. We will incorporate many parts of the world's experiences into our daily curriculum;

I truly wish I could impress upon you how much of a struggle it is to find daily resources that enrich our students lives.

I purchased a computer with my own money that can really be enhanced as an educational tool if we could utilize it with an LCD. An eighteen-year old overhead projector really limits the education experience. A new LCD links the imagination of thirteen and fourteen year old with the world of old and new, it expands and enhances their entire education experience. Thank you
