Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I team-teach 40 under-privileged students, often in one room with limited seating and space. The desks barely hold books and we do many art, science, and social studies projects. Our students need seat storage so we can effectively work together in one room on all of our hands-on projects.

My students are from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and often come needing supplies, support, and lots of love.

We buy as many things for them as we can, but often their basic needs are so great that we have little money left for things like storage space. Our school is a Title One school and the student population is mostly Hispanic and Haitian, with 99% being considered economically needy. These are very special children with very big needs, and they truly appreciate everything that we do for them.

My Project

With the seat storage, students will be able to have room to effectively work on a project without having to waste time trying to juggle their books, materials, and supplies all in one small space (often a small cubby). They will be able to better keep track of their supplies, and we will not have to replace broken items as often, since they will actually have a designated place to keep things they are given. Transition time between activities will be cut down, as we can simply store our items and move on to the next activity, rather than having to carry all the materials into another place to hold them. This will allow us more learning time and we can do more projects.

Having this ability to move seamlessly between subjects without all the pack up and put away time it takes to move all the materials somewhere else will truly allow these kids to learn more.

The less time we spend doing clean-up, the more time we have for the activities. 10-15 minutes of clean-up time may not seem like a lot, but to a struggling learner it can make all the difference if that time is used wisely and it is spent "doing" rather than cleaning.
