Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is said that the art of teaching is that art of assisting discovery. This is what I consider myself to be, a guider of discovery. It is important to teach students to discover the environments that surround them. It is also important to teach them to protect this environment, to ensure a future for everyone. The students in my classroom come from all backgrounds, from a large population of English Learners, as well as students with special needs, all nestled into a high-need community.

In my classroom, students face obstacles in their lives that seem more difficult that most adults have to endure.

There are students dealing with death, cancer, family separations, homelessness, and much more. Not only are students dealing with these personal problems, but they are also dealing with financial problems of parents losing jobs. To them, this means a lack of supplies, clothing, and in some cases even food. It is of utmost importance that the kids see that they can make a difference in themselves through school and in the environment as a means for their future. Students must pass state tests in middle school. Everything is focused on these tests, but it is also important to give students to opportunity to better themselves through outside means. Students must be given the opportunity to experience successes on their own in a meaningful way. By allowing students to have true hands-on experiences with the environment, students are able to create true, deep memories.

My Project

My students need to discover environmental science through the study of owls. We need books and Pellet Study Kits. The key to these positive experiences is allowing kids to love what they are doing in school and to give them a purpose. My students need to have fun while learning, which is exactly what they will do with the owl pellets. They will learn about fascinating creatures, and see why they need to protect the environment. Students will also be able to grasp why they need to help and participate in the school's recycle program, as it affects animals so greatly. Students will get to see the food chain in action and will get to see why their cleaning up and recycling is necessary to keep this food chain going. Students will get hands-on environment experiences, while helping the environment. These activities will help students in my classroom from all backgrounds.

You can make it possible for my students to learn to help the environment.

You can give them a purpose and drive. You can make a difference in the lives of my students now and into the future. You can make them successful and positive in school and in life.
