This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In a technological world, we ask our students to know much more about computers and the Internet than in past years. My students love using our mobile computer labs but have no way to save their work. Work saved to the school's servers often disappears.

My students are great people.

I've been with them since sixth grade and now, in eighth grade, I can see glimpses of the adults they will grow into. They are constantly striving to live up to the expectations of the adults in their lives; parents, teachers and administrators. They are, however, far more tech savvy than many of those who are in charge of them. Unfortunately, many come from lower economic strata of society and don't have access to computers at home. School and the library become their outlet. At school, without memory sticks, the students must save their work on the school servers which means it is often deleted or copied over inadvertently. Many excellent essays, presentations and research works have disappeared because of a lack of resources to save the work.

My Project

My students, in sixth grade, did research on the Roman Empire and built wonderful Power Point presentations, complete with sound and images. Those presentations were, unfortunately, lost forever when the server on which they were stored crashed. Some of my intellectually disabled students have built portfolios of work that are constantly in danger of being lost because they have no place to store the items. These memory sticks will be a beginning, a secure storage bin, that will allow their projects to be kept and transferred to future teachers. This classroom set of memory sticks will be just the resource needed to take our classroom to the next level. Student can create projects that can be worked on for a longer time and will be available for review and improvements!

A chance for my students to create an enduring work, something that will last longer than our next computer malfunction.

Project that have had to be cut short because of a lack of storage space can now be expanded upon, enhancing the learning for all of the children. With these memory sticks, a permanent portfolio of work for our challenged students can be created and passed on, allowing them to have a lasting body of work that will help them show their progress and build on it.
